Hmmm. Could these be made cheaply from plastic fibers, fused together by potting them in a plastic with an appropriate refractive index? (Damn, I’ve just disclosed the idea publicly. There goes my patent, and anyone else’s, for that matter.)
I especially like the part that says “what happens if you flip it upside down?” … “This.”
